Profile integration from Higher Logic

by Brett Wangman — last modified May 09, 2011 02:22 PM

Higher Logic introduced some really cool Profile management and integration options with latest release. Sure to be a hit with OPENAssociations clients.

In today's online world, professional Profile management is becoming an increasingly important and complicated matter.  With every new site we join, we need to complete a Profile about ourselve.  And trying to keep this plethora of Profiles consistent can become a full time job.

That is why I really like the new Profile functionality that Higher Logic has just released to subscribers of its Connected Community service.  Now, a member of a Connect Community, can populate (or a better way to thing about it - synchronize) their Profile on a Connected Community with their profile of LinkedIn.  So, one can quickly update one's Picture, Bio, Education and Job History by simply comparing one's two Profiles on the same screen and then choosing which content you want to sync between these two profiles.   Pretty cool.

One can also add a Twitter feed directly into your Profile as well as link to other profiles one might have on other social networking sites.

While these features will only get better over time, this is a huge step forward for Profile management.  And it once again sets Higher Logic apart for other association collaboration providers.

To see what I am describing, take a look at my Profile on the Higher Logic User group site

Looking forward to Higher Logic Super Forum and ASAE Tech Conference

by Brett Wangman — last modified Dec 10, 2010 11:30 PM

I am a true believer in the value (and wonder) of working virtually... but sometimes it is just nice to meet people face to face.  This is especially true with regard to Higher Logic and HUG.

Although I have been working with the fine folks at HL for several years now, I have only met them in the flesh a couple times (at trade shows).  So I'm really looking forward to next week.

The same is true for all the HUGsters I've learned from using HUG.  It will be great to hear more about your specific situation and how we can all work together to evolve the art and science of managing communities.  I am also anxious to share some of the things we've learned while launching OPENAssociations (Avectra Pro + Higher Logic + Plone) a year ago.

And immediately following the HL Super Forum is the ASAE Technology Conference (Dec 14-15).  I will be in the Higher Logic booth (415).  Stop by and say Hi.

Engagement strategies and the wonders of a collaborative community

by Brett Wangman — last modified Apr 07, 2010 09:55 PM

Nothing beats a good community to solve problems and motivate individuals to action.

I just realized it has been quite awhile since I last posted. Like everyone else, I have a good excuse... CLIENTS.  We have been extremely busy the last couple months and OPENAssociations has really taken off and we find ourselves working late into the nights helping launching collaboration sites for our association clients.

So, I don't have much time here, but I wanted to send out my regards to the actively growing community at Higher Logic.  The Higher Logic User Group, while still relatively small, has really proven to be a great resource for all of us who are involved in and dedicated to launching online communities.

A great example of that would be members of this community who are taking the time to help educate each other on what is working and not working in their community deployments.

One of the most active members of this community, and a very good writer, is Mark Eichler.  To see what I mean about this community, read Mark's recent post on the importance of assessments.

Now back to work.....

Plone is an Enterprise Grade CMS - and we have the brochure to prove it

by Brett Wangman — last modified Dec 13, 2009 07:59 PM

Our partners at Contextual Corp have together a great overview of Plone.

We have been working with Plone (as our main content management system) for close to four years now.  In that time, we have come to love  Plone and the overall open source movement.

The only problem we had with Plone is the fact that not enough people knew how great it was.  Despite some of the biggest companies, associations and government agencies using Plone, its popularity has always been overshadowed by other platforms that were not as good technically, but had very good marketing and branding efforts.

But I am pleased to share that our partners at Contextual Corp, along with Netsight Internet Solutions (UK) have writen and produced an excellent overview of Plone.  If you ever had doubts about Plone's heritage and its standing in the CMS market, this is a good reminder of how strong this platform is.

My Love/Hate Relationship with Flash

by Brett Wangman — last modified Dec 07, 2009 02:42 AM

This weekend, I was reminded of my love for and hate of Flash.

Our business partner, Higher Logic, produced a great looking Flash animation that shows the benefits of using an online community.  It is really well designed (see it at: http://hug.higherlogic.com/HUG/HUG/Home/Default.aspx), and more importantly, the progressive thinkers at Higher Logic made the animation, including the source file, available to all partners.  I love this idea of building and then sharing assets for everyone's benefit.

Now, here's my problem.  As we design and deploy new association sites, we are specifically staying away from using Flash.  My rationale is simple (if not, perhaps a little flawed); I don't want to use Flash in a dominant area of any site since Flash does not play on iPhones.  And with the number of iPhone users growing at such a frantic clip, I don't want to have a growing number of users unable to view a key part of one of our sites.

So when will Apple fix this obvious (and only real) shortcoming of the iPhone? Only Steve Jobs knows that answer... and we all know how hard getting secrets out of him is.

So for now, I will continue to stay away from using Flash but always appreciate a well executed animation (by viewing it on my PC).

Finding a new service that works - what a pleasant surprise

by Brett Wangman — last modified Dec 03, 2009 11:15 PM

A quick review of a new wireframe tool I've been using

We are in the process of launching a new collaboration center for a confederation of non-profit organizations. The key ingredient to this new collaboration center is that it must be easy to navigate (yet have tons of features and functionality).

So, knowing that site navigation and the site's information architecture are keys to success, we have spent a fair amount of time building wireframes of the site, making sure that we get the site well organized and easy to navigate BEFORE moving to the "pretty pictures" and "rounded corners" design phase.  In the past, we would have used PowerPoint to construct these wireframes.  But while I love PowerPoint for most things, this is a task it is not specifically designed for.  So a month ago, I did a quick search for "wireframe tools" and to my delight, found that there is a whole set of providers of this type of functionality.

Long story short, I began using iPlotz (http://iplotz.com/) and I am here to tell you... it is absolutely worth the $15 a month service fee.  I won't bore you with all the product details (since their demo does a good job of that), but I will tell you that this solution has saved me a ton of aggravation using tools not built for this activity, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has to design a site and collaborate with others online about the design.

Where does AMC advertising fit between Brain Surgeon and House Painter?

by Brett Wangman — last modified Oct 16, 2009 11:25 PM

What is the most effective way to advertise an AMC?

Let me tell a little story...

I was recently purchasing some new business cards (featuring our new logo).  I use www.vistaprint.com (which I highly recommend).  While purchasing these business cards, I was continually prompted by the site to consider purchasing other related items (mugs, tshirts, envelopes, stamps, etc...).  Now while this is kinda annoying, since I just wanted to complete my transaction and get on with my life, I can't fault a site for trying to get as much of my potential business as possible while I'm shopping.

So, back to my story... as I was purchasing my business cards, I saw an ad for Car Magnets.  A large magnet that you can put your advertising message on and then slap onto the side of your car.  Now, I know as you're reading this, you are saying to yourself... "No you didn't.  Wow that's cheesy."  But for some reason, I couldn't help resist the logic of this purchase.  First of all, this Magnet only cost $15.  I figured it wouldn't bankrupt me even if  I hated it when it arrived.  Furthermore, I have a 45-minute drive everyday between our home in the city (Chicago) and our office in the suburbs (Glenview).  During this drive, I literally pass (or get passed) by hundreds if not thousands of cars.  And with Chicago having the second largest concentration of associations and association executives (my prospects) in the country, the math started getting interesting. Especially the potential ROI from a one time purchase of $15. So I went ahead and purchased the Magnet.

TCAG Car Banner Ad

Then the real debate began...  Who is allowed to advertise their business on the side of their car, and actually improve their chances of finding a new client or two?  We know that this sort of thing is fine for real estate brokers and house painters.  But would you ever go to a brain surgeon who advertised on the side of their Bentley?  Probably not.

So the question remains unanswered for the moment.  Where does an AMC fit in this perception continuum?  If you were looking for help with your association, would you consider calling TCAG if you saw my ad while stopped at an intersection, chatting on your cell phone?

Stay tuned.... (and if you live in Chicago, give me a honk if you see me!)

Learnings for and from AMCs

by Brett Wangman — last modified Aug 20, 2009 04:44 PM

Just recently attended the AMC pre-conference prior to the ASAE 09 Conference.

Had the great pleasure of meeting with many AMC owners and we engaged in a variety of discussions about the best practices we all use to help drive growth within our clients and our companies.

Here were a few that stood out:

  • Lock in domain names for your clients on Facebook, LinkedIN and Twitter even if your client is not currently on these platforms.
  • Sometimes, as AMCs, we need to fire a client.  Not profitable. Lost of harmony between us and the client.  Many reasons.  But the big idea is that we need to be in control of our company's future.

Staff Development

  • Encourage employees to take leadership positions in volunteer orgs
  • Support the CAE process
  • Create a reading group that educates eomployees on a specific association related topic
  • Participate in ASAE's Circle Club
  • Develop cross functional teams to create greater efficiencies
  • Have team members understand how actions of one staff member affects other team members

Client Management

  • Give as much personal attention as possible
  • Use a Report Card process to report all activities and outcomes you've produced for your association client.  Tie all strategic initiatives to this Report Card

Operations

  • Renegotiate contracts with suppliers (like leases/rent) and show savings to client

I Connected at ASAE 09

by Brett Wangman — last modified Aug 19, 2009 03:54 PM

ASAE 09 proved to be a very worthwhile experience.

Just go back from Toronto and the ASAE 09 meeting (and AMC pre-conference).  I was a newbie at both, and wow, was I pleasantly surprised.

I met a variety of really interesting folks and really connected with the overall themes of the conference.  I plan to write more over the next couple weeks, but for now, please enjoy this great example of association professionals collaborating with each other to, in this case, produce a very well orchestrated conference theme song.

Interesting thoughts on building a business selling open-source software

by Brett Wangman — last modified Aug 11, 2009 06:40 PM

I have started reading Matt Asay's blog on CNET for the last couple months.

Matt's article today is a nice twist.  Turning the thoughts and advice of someone who is trying to help proprietary software companies compete with open source developers and using them as food for thought for businesses selling open source based solutions.

Definitely worth the read: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13505_3-10307348-16.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-20

When you get your Elevator Pitch right...

by Brett Wangman — last modified Aug 11, 2009 04:05 PM

In preparation for ASAE09, I've been thinking about the process of introducing strangers to TCAG in 60 seconds or less.

As an owner of a company, it is ultimately my responsibility to develop our company's elevator pitch -- Those quick couple of sentences that positions our organization in the marketplace.

I recently wrote the following for our Solution Partner listing at Higher Logic, one of our business partners.  After looking at a day later, I like it... Now as a former advertising copywriter, I am sure that I will continue to read and tweak it.  But for a couple hours, at least, I am just going to leave it alone.  Take a read and let me know what you think.

Elevator Pitch for TCAG:

The Center for Association Growth (TCAG) is a uniquely positioned solution provider to associations and non-profits.  As an association management company (AMC) with deep technology expertise and collaboration management experience, we understand what it takes to grow associations in a Web 2.0 world.  Our OPENAssociations platform combines the best open source and Software-as-a-Service applications into one integrated solution, backed by proven management services.

Three cheers for Higher Logic's hire of Andy Steggles

Earlier today, Higher Logic, a TCAG business partner, announced that they have hired Andy Steggles as their new COO.  Read Press Release.

While I have not had the pleasure of meeting Andy in person yet, I have been reading his comments for some time now.  Specifically, I have interacted with him on the Social Networking and Media Association site, which he runs.  He is always quick with an answer and always gives insightful details.  And he has really led a great effort to add interesting features to the Higher Logic platform.

Higher Logic is fortunate to have him.  (And so are HL business partners and our clients).

Heading to ASAE09... Will our paths cross?

by Brett Wangman — last modified Jul 23, 2009 08:06 PM

I will be attending this year's annual conference in Toronto. Will you?

Just registered for the ASAE09 conference.

Now I am trying to figure out how to make the best use of my time over an event packed few days.  As an AMC owner, I will be attending the AMC pre-conference on Friday and Saturday.  And I have identified quite a few of the educational programs that I don't want to miss.

But I also want to make sure that I meet as many folks as possible who might be interested in OPENAssociations.  Decided against exhibiting because I didn't want to be anchored to an exhibit booth.  So I hope to set up as many meetings in advance, as possible.

Are you interested in meeting at ASAE09?  Let me know.

Plone's Use within Associations

by Brett Wangman — last modified Jul 15, 2009 10:20 PM

A recap of the ways Plone can be used within associations to meet critical business needs.

We chose Plone several years ago as our standard Content Management System for our association clients.  I can honestly say that we have never regretted that decision.

For us, Plone has been a virtual Swiss Army knife... capable of serving up small, content-only association sites or handling complex workflows and permissioning requirements often found within larger associations.

I put a presentation together that highlighted the versatility we have found within Plone.  Please contact me if you have any specific questions.

Plone and its Competition: Choosing a CMS

by Brett Wangman — last modified Jul 06, 2009 07:16 PM

A great overview of Plone and what everyone needs to consider when choosing a web content management system.

One of the original developers of Plone, Martin Aspeli, has written great overview of Plone and the competitive marketplace it plays in.  Nice to hear that it can hold its own.  And I feel great that Plone is at the heart of our new OPENAssociations platform.

If you are at all interested in CMSs, go read this article: http://www.martinaspeli.net/articles/plone-and-its-competition

Building a virtual introduction to OPENAssociations

by Brett Wangman — last modified Jul 02, 2009 08:40 PM

Been working on a virtual intro to OPENAssociations.

It is still very rough.  Recorded the following version in one take, so I have a lot of editing to do. That said, thought I would post what I have to see if anyone can spare a little feedback. Be gentle.

Cloud Computing - Implications for Associations

by Brett Wangman — last modified Jul 01, 2009 06:40 PM

OK. Everyone is talking about Cloud Computing. So here are a couple resources I thought were helpful.

These days, everyone is talking about the impact and importance of Cloud Computing.  We've been thinking a lot about it here at TCAG because our OPENAssociations platform takes advantage of a lot of Cloud-supported applications.

I found a few resources that help explain Cloud Computing - and its significance to associations.

Cloud Computing 101 - Garry Polmateer from VanDamme Associates does a good job summarizing the concept in this blog post.

Avectra has also put together a series of Cloud Computing educational efforts. A recent webinar provided a comprehensive overview
Avectra - Cloud Computing Webinar

I also appreciated this mini-commercial from Avectra. Might not win any Oscars, but shows their commitment to the concept.

Office Space available for mid-sized Association

by Brett Wangman — last modified Jun 30, 2009 10:17 PM

Office space has become available in our building that would be perfect for an association or non-profit.

Is your Chicago-based association looking for office space?  We might have the perfect spot for you in the building where TCAG has its offices.

See the listing below for details.

http://listing.loopnet.com/16294285

One of the advantages of this space is that it comes fully wired for phone, networking and internet access.  And for a stand alone association looking to lower its operating costs, what better neighbor to have than an association management company?
