Tips for Writing to an Elected Official
Although many issues are complex, a single-page written in a clear, concise manner is preferred and welcomed by most legislators.
ADDRESS THE LETTER PROPERLY
Even if you think you know it, confirm your legislator’s full name, correct spelling and title on the Internet or by calling his/her office.- ALWAYS INCLUDE YOUR LAST NAME AND YOUR ADDRESS
Evenlopes with a return address are often thrown away. To better the chance that you'll receive a response and to show that you're a constituent, make sure all your contact information is included. - USE YOUR OWN WORDS
A personal letter carries more weight than a form letter or post card. That said, don't hesitate to use form letters and petitions as part of a campaign to show that an issue is important to a large group of individuals. - TIME THE ARRIVAL OF YOUR LETTER
Make sure the letter/e-mail arrives before a vote is taken. - BE CLEAR ABOUT THE TOPIC OF YOUR LETTER
Specifically identify the bill or issue of concern to you by referring to the bill’s number or popular title. - BE BRIEF AND CONSTRUCTIVE
If you disagree with the approach of a bill, explain what you believe to be the correct approach. Don't make threats. - GIVE THE REASONS FOR YOUR OPINION
Explain how an issue would affect you, your family, community, business or profession. Concrete arguments for or against a bill will influence a legislator’s opinion.

Dear Assemblymember Smith:
As the parent of a 10-year-old, I am writing to you in support of Assembly Bill 5231, which will be heard in the Assembly Health Committee next month. This bill will have the following effect on our community:
• Increase job opportunities
• Provide after-school programs for kids
• Reduce crime
Thank you for taking the time to consider my concerns regarding this measure. Please keep me informed on the progress of this bill.
Sincerely,
Chris Anderson
